SELECT

Electrical · Scottish electrotechnical trade association

SELECT is the Electrical Contractors’ Association of Scotland. It represents electrical businesses and assesses members against stated technical and commercial requirements.

Checked Official sources below.

What it covers and whether it is required

SELECT membership is voluntary. A SELECT member’s assessed work categories and any separate Scottish certification registration must be checked individually. England and Wales Part P arrangements should not be described as Scottish law.

Joining requirements and costs

The published criteria include a fixed business address, trading history, financial viability, insurance and suitably competent people. Technical assessment checks work samples, test equipment, records and relevant standards. Members undergo periodic assessment after joining.

Check the current fees with SELECT before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.

What it means for homeowners

Look up the company and its work categories in SELECT’s member search. A business approved for one category is not automatically approved for every electrical service. SELECT also describes technical inspection services; ask about scope and fees before commissioning an inspection.

How to check a claim

Official member, card or certificate check: SELECT.

Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.

Where the scheme applies

Scotland is SELECT’s home territory. Projects elsewhere must follow the relevant local rules, and Scottish building standards certification needs its own checks.

Common questions

Does SELECT use the same Part P route as England?

No. Scotland has its own building standards and certification arrangements. Ask which Scottish registration or certification applies to the actual work.

How do I check SELECT status?

Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
