JIB

Electrical · Joint industry body for employment and competence

The Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry sets employment and training arrangements in the electrotechnical sector. Its business membership is different from holding an ECS skills card.

Checked Official sources below.

What it covers and whether it is required

JIB membership is voluntary business participation, not a Building Regulations self-certification scheme. JIB grading records an individual’s recognised occupational grade; it does not certify a particular installation.

Joining requirements and costs

Companies apply through JIB’s membership route and accept the relevant employment arrangements. The JIB handbook explains grading, employment terms and the relationship with ECS. Ask JIB which rules apply to your workforce before treating membership as a simple annual badge.

Check the current fees with JIB before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.

What it means for homeowners

For a domestic electrical job, a JIB reference does not replace checking installer registration and receiving installation certificates. If an individual claims a JIB grade, check their current ECS card and the grade recorded on it.

How to check a claim

Official member, card or certificate check: JIB.

Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.

Where the scheme applies

The JIB electrical contracting arrangements are distinct from Scotland’s separate industry arrangements. Confirm the correct body and employment agreement for the business location.

Common questions

Is JIB membership the same as an ECS card?

No. JIB business membership and an individual’s ECS card serve different purposes. A grade may appear on an ECS card, but neither is an installation compliance certificate.

How do I check JIB status?

Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
