ECA
Electrical · Electrotechnical trade association
ECA represents businesses delivering electrical and other engineering services. It offers technical, commercial and employment support; it is not the same organisation as NICEIC or NAPIT.
Checked Official sources below.
What it covers and whether it is required
Membership is voluntary. It is a contractor trade association, not a substitute for the relevant electrical certification, Building Regulations notification or an individual electrician’s qualifications.
Joining requirements and costs
ECA offers membership to organisations meeting its technical and certification standards. Applicants discuss the activities they carry out and provide the certification or assessment evidence relevant to their work. Use its application team to confirm the commercial, insurance and ongoing assessment conditions for the business.
Check the current fees with ECA before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.
What it means for homeowners
Find the company through ECA’s member directory and check the separate certificates required for your job. If a guarantee or bond is offered, obtain the terms and eligibility in writing rather than assuming the ECA logo insures the whole contract.
How to check a claim
Official member, card or certificate check: ECA.
Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.
Where the scheme applies
Membership applications are for businesses with an office in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. SELECT is the sister trade association for businesses based in Scotland.
Common questions
Is ECA membership an electrician’s personal qualification?
No. It is business membership. Check the qualifications of the people doing the work and the company’s relevant certification separately.
How do I check ECA status?
Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
