NAPIT
Electrical · Certification body and competent person scheme operator
NAPIT assesses businesses working in electrical and other building services disciplines. Its schemes include electrical assessment, competent person self-certification and renewable technology certification.
Checked Official sources below.
What it covers and whether it is required
NAPIT distinguishes Electrotechnical Assessment Specification certification from competent person scheme registration. EAS certification covers competence requirements; the competent person route provides Building Regulations notification rights for its authorised work in England and Wales.
Joining requirements and costs
NAPIT’s electrical application requirements include qualifications, relevant standards, suitable installation work, calibrated test instruments and insurance. Its published electrical criteria specify £2 million public liability cover and professional indemnity cover for inspection and testing where applicable.
Check the current fees with NAPIT before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.
What it means for homeowners
Use the official member search and select the work category rather than relying on a generic NAPIT logo. Agree which certificates will be issued and how a complaint would be handled. Self-certification of one’s own work is not automatically authority to certify another installer’s work.
How to check a claim
Official member, card or certificate check: NAPIT.
Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.
Where the scheme applies
UK businesses, with self-certification territory and permissions dependent on the individual scheme. England and Wales Part P arrangements do not automatically apply in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Common questions
What happened to Stroma Installer Certification?
The official Stroma installer portal says its installer scheme closed and merged into NAPIT in August 2021. Check present registration through NAPIT, not an old Stroma logo.
How do I check NAPIT status?
Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
