National Security Inspectorate

Fire security and locks · Security and fire certification body

The National Security Inspectorate certifies organisations in security, fire and related specialist services. Its certification schemes differ in scope and level.

What it covers and whether it is required

NSI certification is voluntary, although insurers or clients may require a suitable certified provider. It is not a statutory licence for every security activity or a guarantee that any alarm will satisfy every insurer.

Joining requirements and costs

Applicants select the relevant scheme and undergo its assessment and audit requirements. NSI says its Gold schemes include ISO 9001 certification. Fire certification under BAFE has its own scheme scope and should be checked separately.

Check the current fees with National Security Inspectorate before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.

What it means for homeowners

Use NSI’s company finder and confirm the scheme, branch and activities. Check the insurer’s requirements before commissioning an alarm or security system. Certification of the business does not remove the need for the correct design, commissioning and maintenance documents.

How to check a claim

Official member, card or certificate check: National Security Inspectorate.

Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.

Where the scheme applies

UK security and fire sector. Confirm the service’s territorial scope, any police-response requirements and the conditions of your own insurer.

Common questions

Will every NSI-certified company meet my insurer’s exact alarm requirement?

Not necessarily. Check the scheme and service scope against your insurer’s written conditions before placing the order.

How do I check National Security Inspectorate status?

Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
