Security and Low Voltage

Explore security and low voltage in plain English, with practical context, common distinctions and questions to ask before work starts.

Start with the entries below. They are part of a growing reference library, not an exhaustive technical specification or a substitute for specialist assessment.

CCTV installation
CCTV installation is the design, positioning, connection and commissioning of cameras and recording equipment for an agreed security purpose. A useful system must capture appropriate evidence, protect access to the recordings and respect privacy. More cameras and a higher advertised resolution do not automatically produce a better security result.
Getting into aerial installation
Aerial installation develops reception, distribution and fault-finding skills for television and related systems. Domestic aerials, satellite dishes, communal networks and wider telecommunications share some principles but are not the same job. Training should match the system and include safe access, reliable fixing and customer diagnosis.
Getting into security-system installation
Security-system installation includes surveying, fitting, configuration, testing and maintenance of systems such as alarms and CCTV. Electronic knowledge, practical skills and customer handover all matter. Fire detection, access control and particular security schemes can add specialist responsibilities; they are not interchangeable with fitting a domestic camera.
Video doorbell
A video doorbell combines a visitor button, camera and two-way communication features. It may use batteries, a wired power supply, local storage or a cloud service depending on the product.
