CHAS

Contractor assessment · Contractor health and safety assessment scheme

CHAS assesses contractor businesses against health and safety and other supply-chain requirements. The package and certificate matter: a procurement assessment is not a technical trade qualification.

Checked Official sources below.

What it covers and whether it is required

CHAS is a voluntary assessment route that clients may require contractually. It is an SSIP member scheme, but passing an assessment does not transfer a contractor’s legal safety duties to CHAS.

Joining requirements and costs

The business submits evidence appropriate to its activities, workforce and chosen assessment. A valid certificate from another SSIP member may support a Deem to Satisfy route, subject to scope and any additional checks. Confirm renewal and document-update requirements for the package.

Check the current fees with CHAS before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.

What it means for homeowners

Verify the company, work categories, assessment scope and expiry. For household work, separately check the actual trade competence, insurance and contract. A CHAS certificate is not a workmanship guarantee or approval of every site method.

How to check a claim

Official member, card or certificate check: CHAS.

Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.

Where the scheme applies

Used in UK supply chains. Check that the assessment covers the contractor’s activities and the client’s project requirements in the relevant nation.

Common questions

Does CHAS certification prove the quality of a finished installation?

Not by itself. It concerns the assessment scope. Technical competence, installation records and project quality need their own checks.

How do I check CHAS status?

Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
