Security and cctv installers A–Z dictionary

UK trade reference · plain English

Start with the security purpose and the evidence needed, not the number of devices. Camera angle, lighting, coverage, recording and secure account ownership determine usefulness. Privacy and data protection may apply when a camera captures beyond a domestic boundary, and business systems have additional responsibilities. Test playback, exports and recovery from failure at handover. Cameras complement physical security rather than replace it.

This A–Z combines useful technical vocabulary with links to full references where the article meets our depth and sourcing checks. An unlinked definition is intentionally kept here rather than turned into a shallow standalone page. Read a quotation against its actual scope: a familiar word is not a complete specification.

C

Camera field of view
The area captured by a camera. A wide view does not automatically provide enough detail to identify a person.
CCTV installation
CCTV installation is the design, positioning, connection and commissioning of cameras and recording equipment for an agreed security purpose. A useful system must capture appropriate evidence, protect access to the recordings and respect privacy. More cameras and a higher advertised resolution do not automatically produce a better security result.

D

Detection zone
An area configured to trigger an event. Test the real scene rather than rely on a default whole-image setting.

E

Export
Saving relevant footage in a usable form. Playback inside an app does not prove that an incident can be shared appropriately.

G

Getting into aerial installation
Aerial installation develops reception, distribution and fault-finding skills for television and related systems. Domestic aerials, satellite dishes, communal networks and wider telecommunications share some principles but are not the same job. Training should match the system and include safe access, reliable fixing and customer diagnosis.
Getting into security-system installation
Security-system installation includes surveying, fitting, configuration, testing and maintenance of systems such as alarms and CCTV. Electronic knowledge, practical skills and customer handover all matter. Fire detection, access control and particular security schemes can add specialist responsibilities; they are not interchangeable with fitting a domestic camera.

I

Image retention
The period footage remains available. Set and justify it for the purpose and applicable data protection responsibilities.
Infrared illumination
Lighting used by suitable cameras in low light. Reflections, nearby surfaces and installation position can affect the image.

N

Network video recorder
Equipment recording streams from compatible network cameras. Storage, access control and secure configuration affect usefulness.

P

Privacy mask
A configured region obscured from the image. It supports considered coverage but does not automatically resolve every legal duty.

U

User permissions
The access rights assigned to individual accounts. Property owners should control administration and recovery rather than share one installer login.

V

Video doorbell
A video doorbell combines a visitor button, camera and two-way communication features. It may use batteries, a wired power supply, local storage or a cloud service depending on the product.
