Asbestos specialists A–Z dictionary

UK trade reference · plain English

Safety: if a material might contain asbestos, leave it undisturbed and do not drill, sand or break it. Have it surveyed, and use a licensed asbestos contractor for removal: HSE requires a licence for most asbestos removal work.

Asbestos terminology must distinguish identification, assessment, removal and clearance. A management survey and a refurbishment or demolition survey serve different purposes. Homeowners should not disturb suspect material to identify it, while tradespeople need suitable information before work begins. The definitions explain documents and service boundaries, not sampling or removal methods. A familiar product name never proves that a material contains asbestos or that it is safe to disturb.

This A–Z combines useful technical vocabulary with links to full references where the article meets our depth and sourcing checks. An unlinked definition is intentionally kept here rather than turned into a shallow standalone page. Read a quotation against its actual scope: a familiar word is not a complete specification.

A

ACM
Asbestos-containing material. The term describes a material's asbestos content, not its condition, fibre-release risk or whether a particular activity requires a licensed contractor.
Air monitoring
Measurement undertaken for a defined purpose by appropriately competent people. The result's scope and conditions matter; one reading is not a universal declaration about an entire property.

C

Clearance
A defined process associated with specified completed asbestos work. Ask which checks and documents are required; a contractor's informal statement that the area looks clean is different.

D

Dutyholder
The person or organisation with relevant responsibilities under the duty-to-manage regime. The actual premises and responsibilities must be considered rather than assuming every homeowner has identical duties.

E

Encapsulation
A specified treatment intended to contain or protect suitable material. It is not a universal alternative to removal or permission to paint over damaged suspect material casually.

L

Licensed work
Asbestos work requiring an HSE licence under the applicable rules. Classification depends on the material, activity and risk, not simply the size of a room.

M

Management survey
A survey supporting ongoing management of a building in normal use. Its limitations must be read; it is not automatically suitable preparation for intrusive refurbishment.

R

Refurbishment survey
A survey for planned intrusive work, with scope matched to the project. Inaccessible areas and limitations need resolving before the relevant work proceeds.
