Demolition and Waste
Safety: if a material might contain asbestos, leave it undisturbed and do not drill, sand or break it. Have it surveyed, and use a licensed asbestos contractor for removal: HSE requires a licence for most asbestos removal work.
Explore demolition and waste in plain English, with practical context, common distinctions and questions to ask before work starts.
Start with the entries below. They are part of a growing reference library, not an exhaustive technical specification or a substitute for specialist assessment.
- Asbestos removal
- Asbestos removal is the controlled removal of asbestos-containing materials using an appropriate method and competent personnel. The legal category of the work determines additional requirements, including whether a licensed contractor is needed.
- Getting into demolition
- Demolition is planned dismantling or removal of structures and components under an appropriate safety system. It is not unskilled destruction or ordinary labouring with heavier tools. Structural stability, services, hazardous materials and the effects on neighbours make competent planning and supervision central from the start.
