HETAS
Gas and heating · Solid fuel and biomass certification and registration
HETAS operates registration for installers and other specialists working with solid fuel, wood-burning and biomass appliances. Its installer registration is separate from its appliance and fuel-related approval activities.

What it covers and whether it is required
HETAS is a competent person scheme route for qualifying installations in England and Wales. Building Regulations notification is the obligation: using HETAS is one permitted route, not the only legal way to arrange a compliant installation.
Joining requirements and costs
HETAS says registrants undertake specific training and routine assessment. Apply for the relevant installation or servicing scope, with the competence evidence and business documents requested by the scheme. Do not assume an appliance approval is an installer qualification.
Check the current fees with HETAS before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.
What it means for homeowners
Check the installer ID and current business listing. For a scheme-notified installation in England or Wales, obtain the compliance certificate. Keep appliance instructions, commissioning information and any separate guarantee; a servicing visit is not the same as an installation notification.
How to check a claim
Official member, card or certificate check: HETAS.
Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.
Where the scheme applies
The installer search includes England, Wales, Scotland and the Channel Islands. HETAS describes its compliance-certificate self-certification route for England and Wales; confirm local arrangements elsewhere.
Common questions
Does a HETAS product listing approve the person fitting it?
No. Product approval and installer registration are different. Check the business and the relevant installer scope separately.
How do I check HETAS status?
Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
