CIPHE

Plumbing and water · Chartered professional body

The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering is a professional body for people working in plumbing and heating. Individual membership grades recognise different qualifications and experience.

Checked Official sources below.

What it covers and whether it is required

CIPHE membership is voluntary professional membership. It does not replace Gas Safe registration, Building Regulations compliance or an approved water contractor registration where one is claimed.

Joining requirements and costs

There are membership routes for students, installers, designers, lecturers and others. CIPHE assesses the appropriate grade against qualifications and experience and offers an experienced-worker assessment route. Professional development is part of its professional purpose; check the requirements attached to the actual grade and any additional register.

Check the current fees with CIPHE before applying. Ask whether the quotation includes application, assessment, renewal and any per-job charges. Use published fees or ask for a written quotation.

What it means for homeowners

Check the individual through CIPHE’s Find a Plumber service and ask which professional designation they hold. CIPHE publishes a complaints procedure for disputes involving members. Membership is not automatically an insurance policy for the work.

How to check a claim

Official member, card or certificate check: CIPHE.

Match the record to the named person or contracting business. Check the current scope, not just a logo on a van or an old certificate. If the public record does not show the detail you need, ask the body to confirm it before appointing the business.

Where the scheme applies

UK professional body with members beyond the UK. Check local statutory requirements separately in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Common questions

Does CIPHE membership belong to the person or the whole company?

Professional membership is primarily an individual status. Confirm the named person’s grade and any separate business or approved contractor registration.

How do I check CIPHE status?

Use the official verification service linked in this guide. Match the person or legal business name, current status and relevant work category. For a guarantee, check the document issued for your contract as well.
