SSSTS

Plain English. Practical detail. UK context.

SSSTS is CITB's Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme. It develops health-and-safety understanding for people who have or are about to have site-supervisory responsibilities. It is a training certificate, not a trade qualification, a universal legal licence to supervise any project or automatic appointment to a principal contractor role.

Safety: if a material might contain asbestos, leave it undisturbed and do not drill, sand or break it. Have it surveyed, and use a licensed asbestos contractor for removal: HSE requires a licence for most asbestos removal work.

Who the course is designed for

CITB describes a two-day course for new and aspiring supervisors, with previous safety knowledge recommended even though it lists no formal entry requirements. It covers practical responsibilities around risk, communication, welfare and safe site behaviour. A trainee moving towards supervision should discuss whether the role and existing experience match the course. Someone looking for a first trade apprenticeship needs a broader occupational route, not only SSSTS. Employers should identify the real duties and further support required rather than promote a worker solely because a short course has been booked.

Turn knowledge into daily supervision

CITB's aims include risk assessments, method statements, permits, inspections, occupational health and environmental controls. A supervisor should understand how these arrangements relate to the actual site. Copying a generic method statement is not the same as checking whether workers can follow it. Trainees need a clear route to ask questions and report changes. Supervisors should recognise when work exceeds their own technical competence and obtain help. The course does not make someone a structural designer, electrical inspector, asbestos-removal specialist or competent person for every equipment examination.

Validity and refresher planning

CITB states five-year certification and a refresher route before expiry. Check current scheme rules, provider approval and assessment requirements when booking. Do not assume that a card or certificate continues indefinitely because the person has remained employed. Pay and training costs vary, so compare actual vacancies, current official wage information and written training terms. Keep accurate certification and development records. Renewal is useful, but relevant practical experience, workplace instruction and the employer's competence assessment remain necessary throughout the period rather than only on the last day.

What a homeowner should understand

On a domestic project, ask who supervises work, coordinates trades and handles unsafe or unexpected conditions. SSSTS can be relevant supporting evidence without proving the whole business meets every Building Regulations or CDM responsibility. The two frameworks have distinct roles and competence requirements. Agree site protection, access, communication and records rather than rely on initials beside a name. A useful career plan combines the course with supported responsibility and feedback. No salary uplift or guaranteed job outcome is claimed. Supervisors should have enough authority, time and resources to act on concerns, not merely carry responsibility for a programme they cannot influence.

Frequently asked questions

Does SSSTS qualify someone in every construction trade?

No. It is supervisory safety training, not every occupational or specialist qualification.

Is passing the course an automatic principal-contractor appointment?

No. The actual role, competence and legal appointment requirements remain separate.
