Chimney sweeps A–Z dictionary
UK trade reference · plain English
Safety: gas work must only be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for that type of appliance. Check their ID card or the Gas Safe Register. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the gas emergency number: 0800 111 999 in Great Britain or 0800 002 001 in Northern Ireland.
Chimney sweeping, appliance servicing, flue repair and installation are different instructions. A homeowner should describe the appliance, known history and access, and ask which checks and records the service includes. A tradesperson should state limitations and refer defects beyond the agreed competence. The glossary explains useful language, not a safe procedure for working on a flue or a promise that sweeping alone establishes every aspect of installation safety.
This A–Z combines useful technical vocabulary with links to full references where the article meets our depth and sourcing checks. An unlinked definition is intentionally kept here rather than turned into a shallow standalone page. Read a quotation against its actual scope: a familiar word is not a complete specification.

B
- Baffle
- A component directing flow within some appliances. Its design and maintenance requirements are product-specific, and it should not be removed or changed casually to improve draw.
C
- Cowl
- A terminal fitting at a chimney outlet. The correct product depends on fuel, appliance, flue and exposure; similar appearance does not prove suitability.
- Creosote
- A description associated with deposits from combustion. The condition and treatment need competent assessment rather than a household chemical remedy or a promise that any brush removes every deposit.
D
- Draw
- The movement of combustion products through the flue in this context. Poor performance can have several causes and must not be diagnosed solely from the weather.
F
- Flue
- The passage carrying combustion products away. It is not simply the decorative chimney structure, and its suitability depends on the appliance, fuel and construction.
- Flue liner
- A specified lining forming part of a suitable flue system. Material, diameter, installation and appliance compatibility matter; a liner does not automatically repair every chimney defect.
S
- Soot
- Combustion deposit which can accumulate in a system. Its presence or removal is not a complete assessment of structural condition, ventilation or appliance performance.
- Sweeping access
- An arrangement allowing the intended system to be cleaned. Access must suit the actual route and components rather than rely on a hope that equipment will reach every section.
