Carpet fitters A–Z dictionary

UK trade reference · plain English

Safety: if a material might contain asbestos, leave it undisturbed and do not drill, sand or break it. Have it surveyed, and use a licensed asbestos contractor for removal: HSE requires a licence for most asbestos removal work.

Carpet fitting includes measuring, planning, subfloor preparation, underlay and finishing details. Compare quotations on the complete scope rather than only a price for visible carpet. Pattern direction, joins, thresholds and door clearances should be agreed before cutting. These definitions help homeowners understand the specification and trainees recognise practical decisions; they are not a substitute for product guidance, safe handling or assessment of old flooring before disturbance.

This A–Z combines useful technical vocabulary with links to full references where the article meets our depth and sourcing checks. An unlinked definition is intentionally kept here rather than turned into a shallow standalone page. Read a quotation against its actual scope: a familiar word is not a complete specification.

A

Action backing
A backing description used for some carpets. Compatibility with the intended installation method must be checked from the actual product, not inferred from its appearance.

G

Gripper
A perimeter component used in suitable stretched-carpet installations. Product choice and positioning must suit the job and avoid creating an exposed sharp edge or damaging concealed services.

J

Join
The meeting of carpet sections in the planned layout. Position, pile direction and pattern affect appearance; a seam should not be promised completely invisible under every light.

N

Nap
The directional character of the pile. Adjacent sections and viewing conditions can change perceived shade even where the carpet comes from the same intended product.

P

Pattern repeat
The recurring dimension of a patterned design. Quantity planning and seam arrangement must allow for it rather than simply divide room area by roll width.

S

Stretch fitting
An installation approach used with suitable carpet systems. It needs appropriate tools, technique and compatible components rather than an assumption that every backing can be stretched.

T

Threshold strip
A transition component at a doorway or floor junction. Height, adjoining material, fixing background and access needs affect the appropriate detail.

U

Underlay
A layer beneath a suitable carpet installation. Product choice affects the system, but thicker is not automatically better or compatible with every carpet and heating arrangement.
