Blind installers A–Z dictionary
UK trade reference · plain English
Safety: gas work must only be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for that type of appliance. Check their ID card or the Gas Safe Register. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the gas emergency number: 0800 111 999 in Great Britain or 0800 002 001 in Northern Ireland.
Blinds combine measurement, fixing, operation and safety. A recess measurement is not necessarily a finished blind size, and a particular fixing may not suit every background. Homeowners should agree fabric, controls, clearances and safety arrangements. Installers should follow the product system and assess concealed services before drilling. The glossary is a guide to the specification, not a substitute for product instructions or child-safety requirements.
This A–Z combines useful technical vocabulary with links to full references where the article meets our depth and sourcing checks. An unlinked definition is intentionally kept here rather than turned into a shallow standalone page. Read a quotation against its actual scope: a familiar word is not a complete specification.

B
- Blackout fabric
- A fabric description concerning light transmission through the material. Light can still enter around edges; a fabric label alone is not a promise of a completely dark room.
- Bottom rail
- The lower member of a blind assembly. Its form and movement depend on the product, and it must not be modified casually to overcome an incorrect measurement.
C
- Cord safety device
- A specified component or arrangement addressing operating-cord hazards. Use the correct system and instructions rather than improvise with a hook or assume every device works identically.
F
- Face fixing
- Fixing a product to a suitable vertical face in the intended arrangement. Check background, clearance and load rather than assume the decorative surface supplies adequate support.
H
- Headrail
- The upper assembly supporting or operating a blind. Bracket layout, product dimensions and clearance should be checked before drilling or ordering a replacement.
R
- Recess fit
- An installation intended within an opening. Confirm the supplier's measuring allowances and obstructions; the order dimension may not simply equal the narrowest visible opening.
S
- Slat
- An individual element of a Venetian or vertical blind. Material, width, control and replacement compatibility vary; similar appearance does not establish interchangeability.
T
- Top fixing
- Fixing into a suitable surface above the blind. The background, concealed services and product instructions determine a safe arrangement, not the convenience of the nearest edge.
