Steel beam
Plain English. Practical detail. UK context.
A steel beam is a structural member selected to carry and transfer loads within a designed arrangement. Its section, grade, length, support and connections matter together. A beam is not adequately specified by a room width, a merchant's stock size or the informal label RSJ.

Selection begins with loads and supports
A structural designer considers the actual building, supported construction, span, loads and performance requirements. Bearings and the structure below must be suitable for the resulting forces. Deflection or connection requirements can matter even where a member appears strong. Homeowners should obtain an identifiable design and clarify who verifies site dimensions. Trainees should recognise that an existing beam in another house is not a design precedent. A longer, heavier or deeper member is not automatically a safe substitution if its supports, geometry or connections do not match the engineered arrangement.
Fabrication and installation information
The specification should identify the member and any holes, plates, connections or other designed features. Unauthorised drilling, cutting or welding can affect performance. Fabricators and installers need the correct current drawings and a process for resolving discrepancies. Access, lifting, temporary stability and support must be planned separately from the final structural calculation. This article supplies no lifting method or temporary-support instruction. A trainee should refer an unexpected clash instead of alter the steel to fit. Keep material and fabrication information appropriate to the work rather than assume a painted surface proves compliance.
Building performance beyond strength
Approved Document A addresses structure in England, while relevant fire guidance and the actual building design can require suitable protection. Other UK nations have their own standards. Corrosion exposure, moisture and interfaces with insulation or finishes may also affect detailing. A decorative box is not automatically adequate fire protection, and a nominal board layer should not be substituted for a specified assembly. Building-control inspections and any other consents must be arranged for the project. A party-wall agreement or planning permission does not establish that the beam and its protection are correctly installed.
What homeowners should agree and retain
A quote should identify design references, supply, fabrication, delivery, lifting, bearings, protection, inspections, waste and making good. Clarify responsibility for hidden-condition changes before the wall is opened. Prices and outcomes vary from job to job, so compare written, itemised quotations rather than relying on a typical figure. Tradespeople should document approved variations and checks before concealment. Keep structural calculations, drawings, relevant product information and completion evidence. A beam can disappear behind plaster, but its design and installation record should remain available for future maintenance, alterations and questions about the property.
Frequently asked questions
Is RSJ a complete specification?
No. The exact structural section, grade, dimensions, supports and connections must follow the design.
Can holes be drilled wherever services need them?
Not without checking and authorising the structural detail. An inconvenient clash does not permit an improvised alteration.
