Solar PV installation
Plain English. Practical detail. UK context.
Solar photovoltaic installation fits equipment that converts daylight into electricity for use in a property or export to the network. A typical system includes panels, mounting, DC wiring, an inverter and electrical protection. Solar PV generates electricity; solar thermal collectors heat a fluid and are a different technology.
Safety: use a registered electrician, for example one registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, for electrical installation work. Do not remove covers or open electrical equipment yourself.

What a useful survey covers
Roof orientation, shading, usable area, condition and structural capacity affect the proposal. A roof needing repair should be considered before it is covered by equipment. Cable routes, inverter location, access, electrical supply and meter arrangements need coordination. A battery may be included, but it is not necessary for all solar PV systems and should have its own justified specification. Ask the designer to explain assumptions about shading and household use rather than focusing only on the panel count.
Design and network connection
Panel strings, inverter operating ranges and equipment ratings must work together. DC connectors that appear similar are not automatically compatible. The electrical design must address isolation, protection and identification, including the fact that panels can generate in daylight even when the household main switch is off. Network connection procedures depend on the system’s characteristics and can involve G98, G99 and export limitation arrangements. Do not assume a battery or export limiter removes every application requirement.
Common mistakes
Generation, self-consumption, export and bill savings are different figures. Any forecast should state its assumptions rather than promise a guaranteed return. More panels may not fit the roof safely or produce the best result where shading and connection limits apply. Battery placement should consider fire safety, temperature, access and current guidance, not merely unused space. A system does not necessarily provide power during a grid outage; backup operation requires suitable equipment and a designed arrangement.
Standards, alternatives and handover
MCS certification and consumer protection have distinct roles. MCS’s redeveloped scheme is live in 2026 and no longer universally requires consumer-code membership under that route; check the installer’s transition status and actual protection arrangements. BS EN IEC 62446 is relevant to PV documentation and testing; BS 7671 also applies to the electrical installation. Planning and building requirements depend on the property and UK nation. At handover obtain the design, equipment schedule, commissioning and test records, network paperwork, warranties and a clear shutdown procedure. Keep monitoring accounts under the owner’s control and understand what an alert actually indicates.
Frequently asked questions
Will solar panels power my home in a blackout?
Not automatically. Most standard grid-connected arrangements shut down unless a specifically designed backup system is included.
Is a battery essential?
No. Its usefulness depends on consumption, tariffs, generation and the proposed operating strategy.
Does solar PV heat tap water directly?
PV generates electricity. A diverter can use suitable surplus electricity for water heating, but solar thermal is a separate technology.
