Arboriculture and Tree Work

Explore arboriculture and tree work in plain English, with practical context, common distinctions and questions to ask before work starts.

Start with the entries below. They are part of a growing reference library, not an exhaustive technical specification or a substitute for specialist assessment.

Crown reduction
Crown reduction is selective pruning to reduce the overall dimensions of a tree's canopy while retaining an appropriate structure. It is not simply cutting the top off at an arbitrary height.
Getting into tree surgery
Tree surgery combines practical arboricultural work with tree knowledge and safe methods. Ground work, climbing, chainsaw operation and technical assessment have different competence requirements. A route into the occupation should teach judgement, rescue and supervision arrangements, not simply confidence using a saw or working at height.
